Requirements for a Florida Building Contractor’s License

The State of Florida requires applicants to meet certain basic requirements regarding the following:

CHARACTER

All Applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be of good moral character NOTE** prior criminal incidents Do Not disqualify you, as long as:
  • Your civil rights have been restored.
  • Your debts to society are paid/restored.
  • You have no current or pending liens such as IRS etc…
  • You have no ongoing charges/litigation.

CREDIT SCORE

You must have a credit score of 660 or above. NOTE** If you fall below the 660 FICO credit score, don’t worry. You can still qualify by posting a licensing bond. The amount of the Bond can also be reduced by completing a Financial Responsibility Course.

EXPERIENCE

  • Must have (4) yeas of general construction experience with (1) year of active experience as a Foreman. NOTE** Good News! You don’t have to have the (4) years’ experience before you take the exam.
  • Your test scores are good for (4) years so you have (4) years to gain the required experience.
  • Additionally (3) years of experience requirement can be fulfilled if you have (3) years of college credits regardless of the elected area of study. NOTE** There are also a number of other different ways to meet this experience requirement.
